I have 4 different potato patches.
1 is three 30 foot rows.
2 patches are in a total of 5 tire stacks.
1 other is a different potatos variety in a 50 foot row.
Except for the last patch, the other three sections were started in late
February, about 100 days ago.
All of the 40 tomato plants that were started in the cold frame got killed
(cooked, literally) when I was out of town one day. WAHHHH !!! Long
story. The tomato seeds planted in the ground actually came up yesterday.
However, I'm guessing those are planted too late so I might have wasted
$1.00, Except for one plant purchased in error, the tommatoes are all Roma
and have small 'maters on them, even with temps over 90. However, I'm not
expecting them to do well about 4 weeks from now, baseed on the Desert
Gardening book. We'll see.

I have never heard of planting tomato seeds in the ground. I have
always sown them in containers and then transplanted them 2-5 times
before putting them in the ground. Tomatoes won't fruit if it is over
about 95 degrees.
What kind did you buy?

I'd be stealing little taters...:)

About 100 days ago (Feb)
Wet.... that isn't a problem here :-) We got our first rain since, geez, I
think it was last year sometime......I made irrigation lines and water via
irrigation lines at sunrise to prepare the plants for the hottest part of the
day, and then check in the afternoon for any sign of heat stress. If they
look stressed, I get a garden hose, run it until the boiling water is gone
and then carefully water the soil being careful not to get water on the
leaves (otherwise the sun practically boils the water and burns the leaves).
The sunflowers and the tomatoes are the ones that have just a tad tougher
time if I haven't watered deep enough in the morning.
At least it still gets really cool overnight :o)

I was just wondering the other day how your potatoes were going. When
did you plant? Mine are blooming also. It was so wet, I hope I got
them hilled in time. I'm not much of a potato grower, but getting
better every year.

http://www.nowpublic.com/strange/man-wins-hay-mowing-contest-scythe
found on youtube:
there is one there of one of the Vido kids, but looks to me like it's
Fairlight; her sister Ashley is the one I saw in action who was most
impressive. She covered a huge amount of swath by almost crouching
down, and she was low anyway, simply by virtue of age, and she could
really cover the ground, fast and clean with perfect windrows. Peter
cuts a lot of hay at home and all his kids are, or anyhow used to be,
homeschooled, and they cut hay together, a sight that pleases surely any
parent's eye: all working together for the common good of both the
present and future, says such a picture....Anyway, the video is at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVv597m848s Interesting Gandhi quote at
the end......
pretty lousy cutting, it looks like old, dry, but you can see the
movement pretty well (and with Dougie McLean to boot!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCjySdobDfk&NR=1
this one, from the same guy, who sells them, (from WI, where he also
offers organic duck eggs, nice combo :)
http://www.mysticprairie.net/scythe_shop.php --- don't know anything
else about him), shows, about half-way through, how low the blade rides
over the ground:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdE3ZHRwo2c&NR=1
The Scythe Connection website has some videos, the one shows Peter Vido
cutting around a woodpile, you can see it's fast and easy to go around
obstacles.
http://www.scytheconnection.com/
Also, on that site, which has Peter Vido's offering of items for sale
(well, Kai, his son seems to run it, anyway, I'm guessing it's Peter's
endeavor at it's heart), is part of The Scythe Book (Peter wrote the
second part of the book, which is the technical portion, the rest being
history, lore, etc) offered free. Peter is often in a rift with someone
and my guess is he's just gettin' at somebody by offering it free on the
net, but that's just that--a guess--and the information itself is about
the best that's in print, far as I know, so it's a boon to all. That's
at: http://www.scytheconnection.com/adp/techn1.html
And near the bottom of that page I see he's put some articles he's
written over the years, one of which is entitled "Improving Snath
Ergonomics" and others titled "Making Your Own Snath" and "Snath Design
Discussion"
and last, just so you can see the difference: The way to wear yourself
(and your gear!) down fast: bad, bad, bad.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5fKgscNeGE&feature=related
First time I ever really took time to look around on youtube; one could
easily waste a whole afternoon with such playing around....
