We've rented those 2 man augers in the past, both here and at the city
house and they are simply hard to use even on non-rocky soils. I think
the single person augers are actually easier. Around here, there is one
guy with a big JD tractor that has enough umph on his auger to drill
holes for fencing. Two others have augers, but their tractors (MF and
Mahindra) just don't have the power to drill out rocks. They do fine
down in the valley bottom , though.

Back in the dark ages, a friend and I rented a two-man auger to put
in fence posts as her fences were beyond ancient and the posts were
rotting off. Certainly not a way to keep steers out of the veggies!
I'd used them in the past and hadn't had a problem. It turns out her
little hills must have been one massive upheaval of stone from days
long past! We got down about 8" or so and the thing hit a massive
stone. Well, back then we were young and svelte and the auger
stopped but the top/handles didn't. We must have looked like a
whirly gig <g> The neighbor took pitty on us and came over with his
tractor and sunk the rest of the holes for us!

We're not messing with trying to grow anything in the so-called
soil we have around here! We're having top soil brought in. We too
have those massive rocks everywhere.

When we put up all the posts for the horse fence, we couldn't even
use a 2 man auger ti dig the holes. Ended up renting a mini
excavator.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will
not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius
will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the
world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone
are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve
the problems of the human race"
