The local grocery charges less than $2 / dozen
A neighbor who raises chickens for personal consumption & eggs & sells excess
eggs - $4 / dozen.
The grocery gets my business for eggs.
The grocery also has specials... like 10# bags of frozen chicken legs/thighs
ranging from $3.99 - $4.99 on a regular basis. I stock up on those and
similar specials. Sometimes it is breasts, but more often just legs/thighs
of the heavy cornish X type birds.
With luck, the chicken coop will be built this year and it will be
interesting to cost out eggs and meat production for personal consumption.

Many locals choose to purchase cheap eggs from factory farms and drive
the two hour round trip to get them from the nearest grocery when they
get their other food. Those eggs are watery and flavorless. That is
their choice. We are not willing to sell our eggs for less than the cost
it takes us to produce them. We are not making any profit on them. We
are providing quality local food to people who understand the need to
have a relationship with their food and care about their health and how
animals are treated. None of our customers complain about the price. To
get this kind of egg the alternative is a five hour round trip to Whole
Foods or Central Market, and even then you are trusting the label as Bob
pointed out.
