hmmm..... well, looking at the billstclair site, if you really want to see
how much cain you can raise, keep a wary eye on your compatriots and their
actions. You don't want their cain-raising to spoil yours...
The posts remind me of the political earnestness of a man I knew in Seattle,
and how the far left and the far right can overlap. Anyway, as for the guy,
it was a year before somebody in my circle told me he used to be a Weatherman
(wish I hadn't lost touch with him, it would have been interesting to hear
his take on the Ayers thing). I asked him one day to tell me how the heck he
had ever gotten caught up in something like THAT movement. His story was
that during the Vietnam war, he and a number of other folk were absolutely
convinced the US was going to collapse in on itself, and that the Weather
underground's ideals were the answer to the void that was going to be left.
He did pay for his beliefs. He had been a law student at the UW, but his law
career went into the toilet when he tried to rob a bank in the name of the
Revolution. He did five unrepentant years in a southern penitentiary before
he realized he was NEVER getting out if he didn't make the feds believe he
was a changed man. So he made nice, and he was eventually released. He did
tell me his core beliefs had changed very little, but as long as the
government held the upper hand, then he was going to be a good citizen and
play along. And that the underground should have gone about things a little
smarter than they did.
I can't think of him now without hearing Billy Joel's "Angry Young Man" in my
head...
