So, other than bottle feeding them for the first few weeks, you just let them free range and have a few bails of hay. And, you have to have them castrated at some point. That's all there is to it. I thought you said being a cattle farmer was hard? .............bobford

If you get them early in the spring and butcher in the fall, they don't need any hay. If you have a mother cow, they don't need to be bottle-fed. I just like people to think it's hard work...makes it sound like I do something all day (clearly I'm not doing anything today).

I don't castrate mine, but I'm re-thinking that. If I get them to the butcher young, it's fine, but they can be scary if they get too old and start looking at me funny. I will probably always keep one bull who isn't related to the cows for breeding; I used to have the AI guy come out, but like everything else, it's so much easier and cheaper to do it the 'natural' way. I have a ram, too, but so far he's been a gentleman.
