I think it's more of a partnership. In Michael Pollan's book "The Botany of Desire: A Plants-Eye View of the World" he looks at the co-evolution of people and apples, tulips, potatoes and cannabis. He shows how these species have successfully exploited human desires to flourish and believes agriculture is something the grasses did to people in order to conquer the trees. Plants give pollinators nectar in return for a service, so it's not outlandish to think we have some kind of trade going on with them too.

Well, even stewardship kind of implies that one is tending something lesser than themselves, something dependent and something that needs attention, but plants have lived on this planet far longer than animals, for sure. Is it our ego that makes us think they even need stewardship?

I don't think it's rationalization. I think it's the result of having a conscience - and consciousness, and realizing we are only a small part of the big picture - and that it behooves us to keep that in mind.

Deep thinking, Bev :-) I sometimes wonder things like that, too. I've often noticed that volunteer plants do better than ones I plant and 'tend' (try to bend to my will?). Makes me think. I like the idea of stewardship or care-taking rather than dominion.

I think, I just don't always express myself well. :)
I like the idea of stewardship, too. Is that rationalization to suit our needs?
