Gotcha. Intriguing idea. And practical.

I'm thinking that old bathtubs might be even better. Cast iron will outlast many generations of gardeners. And they already have drain holes. Put them up on as many layers of concrete blocks as you like, put eight-ten inches of rock in the bottom, then a layer of grass/ leaves to act as a filter to keep the dirt where you want it, then create perfect growing soil: topsoil, sand, peat, clay, forest litter, compost, mix it up good and grow great veggies.

DO NOT use any soil from within two hundred feet of black walnut trees!
