Wiyot is huge, on my 'list'. Well-organized today, and will continue to be,
I'm sure, but I always feel really strange engaging in these discussions, as
I
am a 'white' person, and I'm always afraid I'll be viewed with suspicion. I
think you and I have had this discussion before - or parts of it - when I was
asking about the Vanyume.

I moved into this place last December, and one of the things I had need to
put up on the walls was a framed letter from Daniel Peaches - from 1978.
Before
he got to be a big-shot. He and I had been going back and forth - in the
days before email, about the issue of Navajo children being whisked away
into
foster homes and indoctrinated with Mormonism. I was absolutely incensed
that
they would not only be yanked out of their homes, but that their culture
would
be taken from them.

He later wrote me back to say that he had been one of those children. I
didn't know quite how to respond.

The framed letter on my wall, written two years later, was accompanied by a
copy of the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978. What the letter does not say
is
that the 'package' was unsolicited.

I have never, to this day, felt so honored to be asked my opinion about
anything. Anything.
