I think we're left with the politicians we deserve, and it ain't pretty.
Sadly, our system discriminates against those who are highly capable decision makers but poor campaigners.
It is too much to expect any person to be expert in the myriad disciplines needed to keep our country strong. Theoretically, that is what cabinet secretaries and advisers contribute. Alas, power does corrupt and a very strong executive overrides or simply dismisses wise advice for more politically calculated decisions.
Our founders did a helluva job but they could not foresee conditions two hundred years ahead. But who today has a superior plan? We can fine tune only.
Until the last seven years I had held the belief that any president does not hold sufficient power to seriously hurt our country. Now, I hope for balance. Swinging the presidency and the Congress from right to left to right, etc., may be the only way to avoid fascism or socialism.
