Frank, what are you talking about? Rising above what background? A middle class white family who sent him to one of the most expensive and prestigous prep school in the U.S.?
Or are you talking genetics? Both parents highly educated, including a Harvard graduate (his father). BOTH parents and at least one set of grandparents highly articulate.
Or stereotypes as promoted by Wright? "He ain't white. He ain't rich and he ain't privileged." "a black boy raised in a single parent home."
No, he isn't "white," he's half white. He is rich, at least most folks would consider a two income family where the income of just one member is over $165,000 a year to be way beyond middle class. He is privileged and he was raised privileged.
And, if you use his criteria for who is or isn't black (can they dance), then he isn't black either <g> Plus, he wasn't raised in a single parent home. He was raised, for most of his life, in a two-grandparent home or with his mother and stepfather or mother and father. Hardly a single parent home.

That's why Obama's message on Change is so appealing to me. And we certainly can't fault him for rising above his background. getting a good education; becoming so articulate etc. etc.
Just my two cents:)
