Hi Rob...ayup... I split wood by hand for a good many years...and then ran
into a physical problem. A couple of years ago I cut down a huge red
oak...about five feet through the trunk at chest high...in order to make the
pieces small enough to lift into my truck I had to split them with sledge
hammer and wedges. The jarring caused part of the rear of my right eye to
come loose...giving me some big floaters...which I have to this day. Eye Dr.
told me to sell my sledge hammer and other splitting equipment unless I
wanted to have a more serious sight problem...so I quit splitting by hand.
Bought a tractor with my son...for lifting the hvy stuff...and also a
splitter. Best move I ever made...wished I had done it yrs ago...:-) Franklin

The idea of bartering is interesting to me...am going to look into it
further. Franklin

Hi Roxann...the MagicHeat device is a metal rectangular shaped box. It has
ten or a dozen tubes that run through it with a thermostactically controlled
fan mounted behind the tubes...it blows the hot air into the room that is
removed from the flue gas which flows inside the box and around the outside
of the tubed. this device is mounted in the flue pipe. It really removes alot
of heat. I also use FlueCleaner per directions that I bought when I got the
MagicHeat. So far no sign of soot buildup...will know more in the
spring...;-) I also clean my chimney a couple times during the heating
season...Franklin

Hi James...sorry I didn't pick up on your name sooner then this.
Will have to say that your an articulate rascal...some folks have said...or
accused me of being... an old wind bag before now when I carried on and on
about something...;-) cos your not old nuff to be an old wind bag yet...:-)
I feel no need to debate about gadgets...:-) My wife was born on a dairy
farm in southern Missouri...and they didn't have electric power...then they
got it...back in the fifties......ask them if the like gadgets or not..if
they are labor saving ones...I love um...:-) Sure as hell saved them alot of
labor...just in milking their cows twice a day...which they did by hand. Had
to haul their milk two miles in cans to put it in a spring to keep
cool...refrigerated bulk tank helped alot there. And I could go on and
on...but you should have the picture by now...:-)
Ayup...the homesteader question was/is a loaded question...and no easy or
right answer. I have no desire to try and completely live off my land here
even if I could. I do the garden thing...small and large fruit...and my own
firewood. Also my son and I have a nice shop where we do most all our own
repairs on our equipment of all kinds. He is a trained mechinist and mechanic.
You have to be careful when your chopping cabbage and yakking at the same
time...could end up wid a finger part in the slaw...;-) Franklin

I love it when the list picks up some new blood. Even when said blood
courses through the veins of 70 yr old self-professed windbags.

Welcome Franklin.
