Springerles and speculaas. I have a springerle roller that my Gramma had bought from Germany back in the early 1900s. DH loves the springerles in the rock stage. Says they are good for dipping in his coffee like biscotti and loves the anise flavor. So, I put half in a tight lidded old canning jar with a slice of apple for the kidlets and me, half just go in his biscotti jar and stay hard as a rock <g>

Everyone loves the speculaas with all the warm spice flavors.

I usually make husarenhutchens but couldn't find any good hazelnuts and the deer and ground squirrels ate all my raspberries so didn't get any jam made. I've deer proofed the raspberries and when spring rolls around we're adding a few cats to keep the ground squirrel population under control. Husarenhutches will appear again next year!

Tomorrow is German cookie day.

Every one of my 16 great-greats (grandparents) hailed from Germany. Yet, as
often happens, the traditions are all but lost. My grandma's all made
homemade noodles and spritz cookies near Christmas or T'giving, but that was
about it. It wasn't until I was looking through my first Betty Crocker
cookbook at age 12 that I discovered other German cookies (not to mention
others from other countries). So, what do you make? I've wanted to make
Lebkuchen (sp?) and Stollen for the last few years but haven't yet
incorporated it along with everything else.
