Does everyone here agree with Gene that a 410 is only good for sparrows?
What about the cost for ammo? Is there a difference between shot and
slugs for say a 410 vs. a larger (smaller) gauge weapon?

A 410 is kinda small for what you have to do. Going along with James advice, I'd suggest you talk to your neighbors and see if someone has a 20g you can try out, maybe a 12g pump even. With the heavier gun you may surprise yourself at what is 'comfortable'.

Shells are not really spendy & shooting a shot gun is fun.
