Re: price increases...
First, I only sell rabbits to herp owners-basically as snake food. New
customers do have to pay $2/lb, but over the last few years, I have only
had enough rabbits to sell to my long time customers.
When I first got into rabbits, I did try to sell dressed rabbits for
human consumption. There are a lot of problems with that, namely, I
really should be USDA approved, and since I wasn't I got worried about
the feds coming in and taking my farm. Secondly, it seemed that
everyone wanted something different. Some wanted it cut into 4 pieces,
some wanted just legs, some wanted the hearts and livers and some did
not, and it became a pain just to price it. Third, I did not have that
many customers, 3 I think, and it just wasn't paying for all the trouble
it was worth to grow out to butcher size and then have to deal with all
the crap the customers wanted. Snakes aren't picky, and they eat
rabbits whole, guts and all. It's bop 'em and bag em. No muss, no fuss...
I could raise my prices for the herp folks, but I feel badly that my
regular customers can't always get rabbits when they want them. They
patiently wait for me to grow them out and still remain loyal, so I hate
to raise the prices.

Can you increase your selling price some? I don't think your healthy
meat should cost less than what you'd pay for inferior meat at the
grocery. When people taste the difference in your superior product
and understand the benefits of eating it, surely they'd be willing to
pay more. I would. Next time I'm in your area.
