Expect to see a great deal of what WalMart sells for organic to be imported.
"Is this really organic??" "Of course, amigo, trust me!"

Mexican farmers support organic. Dealing with sick workers is expensive. Field foremen carry drugs and syringes to treat workers. Absenteeism is costly.

All the developments have been predictable. A national standard was inevitable and useful in spite of its weaknesses and unfairness to some producers. Organic is a win-win deal for the people. We all win with cleaner water and air. It is a matter of time. How many years for the soil to heal? How many years before the chemical effects become benign?

There is a highly probably connection between chemical use on crops and impotence and sterility. The popularity of sexuality enhancement drugs may well be because of chemical effects. Atrazine is a likely culprit. Remember the Minnesota frogs? That was the canary in the mineshaft.

So I am in favor of organic food becoming mainstream in spite of the predictable negatives. Cleaner soil, cleaner air, healthier people are worth paying a higher price.

Plant a garden and eat the results.
