Idea is to buy a used pickup truck for cash that will serve as a ride here and stay with me through the move out of here. I want to invest in a good homestead vehicle now. After working two hours to get the Avalanche out of some mud a few weeks ago, I am thinking about 4 wheel drive, Chevy, Ford, Dodge regular or extended cab pickup. Any suggestions? What do you think I should consider?

Consider Toyota. Rural mail carriers use them because the front ends stay together. Chris and I use them because they run forever. The only problem with her 1991 Corolla is it leaks oil. Runs perfect, gets good mileage. In a recent post I noted that I have decided against a pickup, which has crappy traction when bed is unloaded and has limited covered cargo area. My current preference is a Toyota Highlander with a trailer hitch. With a pickup, you are always hauling your hauling space with you; with a trailer, only when you need it. Front-wheel drive often negates the need for mileage-depleting and maintenance-cost increasing four-wheel drive.
