Oh -- maybe I missed something in the original post.
This was for particular veterans in a particular location?
Rather than just veterans in general?

Then it makes more sense. They are doing something concrete for people they
can actually help with their efforts. Especially if they actually
personally give the blankets/quilts to veterans and actually talk with them
in the process.

I meet people regularly (because of my work) who want to "do something",
which is good intention. But when they are given ideas on how to actually
DO something, they don't want to be prepared nor get their hands dirty. I
much more admire the young man on a bicycle who stopped by the office for
ideas on how to begin work in the hurricane-ravaged area of Florida and how
to get there with the least hills than I do the church who collected 200
pairs of used shoes for children in Iraq but don't want to pay the postage
to send them there.

The college group who raised money and took canned goods for people in
hurricane-damaged areas is much more effective than those who ask us to
find transport for used clothing. Why can't they just get in their cars and
take them to Florida? It's only 9 hours' drive to damaged areas. And there
are equally damaged areas in North Carolina only 2 hours away. But they'd
rather just collect things and have someone else foot the transportation
and distribution bills...

What or where is Vashon Island, anyway?
