On another list we are discussing RV chalets. These are houses built with no bathroom of kitchen but a large rv sized garage. The RV is parked in the garage and connected to the house to leverage the investment in kitchen and bathroom. The RV can still be moved and used as an RV but this might be a good idea to start with.

Unless you ensnare yourself in the insurance trap, the next is transportation. Next is food, and that is where homesteaders shine. So, a cheap house with a few acres, a modest pickup or car and trailer, low taxes, and you have a good head start to making do with little as you age.

You still have the problem that this is a cash world. You still need money for taxes, health care, etc. That has to come from some where.
