Aphids are usually not a serious problem, unless you have a very young maple and an extensive infestation.  If you do, I've had good success against aphids with BT- bacillus thurigensis.  I was originally going after other pests, particularly cabbage worms, and discovered that it radically reduced the aphid population as well.  BT is a very safe biological insecticide, fairly inexpensive, & easy to use and spray on.  I also had very good success with Safer insecticidal soap on large infestations on my tomatoes & broccoli.

Both PlanetNatural.com  & GardensAlive.com  have a good range of bio-control products, including beneficial insects.  You should be able to find several very different kinds of aphid controls that suit your needs there.

I've found some black aphids on the emerging leaves of a Japanese maple. I tried washing them off with water, but they're pretty stuck. How much damage will they do? Should I leave them, and hope that ladybugs will arrive, or try to oust them with insecticidal soap?
Thanks!
