Since Bacillus thuringiensis affects the digestive system of caterpillars and only caterpillars, I don't know why it would affect aphids. BT var. tenebrionis does kill Colorado potato beetle larvae, but... Perhaps the force of your spray just knocked them off.

Aphids are usually not a serious problem, unless you have a very young maple and an extensive infestation. If you do, I've had good success against aphids with BT- bacillus thurigensis. I was originally going after other pests, particularly cabbage worms, and discovered that it radically reduced the aphid population as well. BT is a very safe biological insecticide, fairly inexpensive, & easy to use and spray on. I also had very good success with Safer insecticidal soap on large infestations on my tomatoes & broccoli.

Both PlanetNatural.com & GardensAlive.com have a good range of bio-control products, including beneficial insects. You should be able to find several very different kinds of aphid controls that suit your needs there.
