Hello Melanie,
I see where you have received a bit of information already. There is a mature walnut tree in the very center of my shade garden. To date I have not had a problem with anything growing there that I am aware of. At the moment there is a climbing hydrangeas going up the tree and forming buds now. Been there about 9 or 10 years now. At the base of the tree are royal ferns and yellow ladyslippers, along with meehania, or creping mint.
The toxicity only effects certain plants... not all.

In the back yard I'm dealing with black walnut toxicity from the neighbor. What plants have you had success with under a black walnut? Don't send me a site with a listing, I'd prefer first hand experience. So far my daylilies aren't happy there, neither is the witch hazel I planted last year. Mondarda seems to be fine. It's in full sun.

Off to dig,
Melanie
