As of this afternoon, you only need autoconf 2.53 (I needed to fix this
because the current cygwin distribution only has 2.53).

So, you can either upgrade to 2.54 now, or wait until tomorrow's snapshot
and upgrade to 2.53.

2.52 just won't cut it, I'm afraid. If we restore support for anything
before 2.53, then 2.54 will stop working.

I tried the above with the latest nightly tarball (after making a couple of
changes to get it to compile at all...documented below) and ran into the
problem that apparently my autoconf is not up to date enough. It claims to
need 2.54 and I have 2.52.
