Smokers (and I mean no disrespect) are junkies. They're not going to stop
socializing and hanging out with friends or seeing shows just because they
have to step out front to smoke. I saw the smoking ban hit NYC, and while I
don't have any figures to back me up, anecdotal evidence seems to support
the idea that it made no difference to anything. Living in NYC, you have
less recourse to chilling at home with friends, because you're too spread
out and your apartments are small, but I don't know a single incidence of
someone deciding that they didn't want to eat out or rock out anymore. And
I know plenty of smokers who are cool with the ban, for all sorts of
reasons.

The reasoning for the ban in NYC was an occupational safety one, which I
find very compelling. If your office had a hole in it which emitted smoke
relatively constantly, you'd demand your boss fix it, right? Many people
who wait tables don't have a lot of job options, and the idea that they have
to risk their health in the process seems positively Victorian in it's
disregard for their well-being.
