I'm not sure which local bands you've been listening to (Cougar
Magnum, perhaps?), but I'd have to disagree wholeheartedly with your
allegation that there is a dearth of quality music around here. Sure,
we've got a few clunkers, but with even the slightest bit of research,
I think that you'll find a lot of awesome music around here.

To begin, the site that you're looking for is Ross Grady's excellent
trianglerock.com. He lists pretty much every good show happening in
the Triangle, gives you a short review, and supplies you with free
music so you can hear the group for yourself. If you utilize his
recommendations, you'll usually find yourself at an awesome rock
show. Also, the Independent Weekly maintains an excellent weekly
concert guide (reservations against 'Eh, Whatever' aside) and
dedicates a significant amount of space towards informing readers
about local music.

If you're looking to hear local music on the radio, you can listen to
Ross' show on WXDU 88.7FM at 4-6PM on Sundays, the Local Lunch on my
station, WKNC 88.1FM, on weekdays from 12-1PM, or my own show, on the
same station, from 5-8PM on Fridays. All of the previous posters have
stated great places to see shows, such as the Local 506, the
Nightlight, and Bull City Headquarters. Often you can find local
groups playing clubs like the Cat's Cradle as well, and if you're in
Raleigh, you might also check out Slim's, the Pour House, or Tir Na
Nog (on Thursday nights).

If you need further proof, check out a few of the following groups,
all of whom are local, have mad chops, and can play a bit more than
'single notes and triads':

Bull City
Hammer No More the Fingers
Annuals
The Physics of Meaning
Tooth
Megafaun
Valient Thorr
Red Collar
I Was Totally Destroying It
Lud
The Old Ceremony
Lost in the Trees

There are plenty more that I could list here, but for the sake of
brevity I figured that these groups would be a good way to prove my
point. Finally, a word of advice: you're not going to make a lot of
friends around here by going into a group like amc-h (90% musicians)
and starting your first post like that, especially because a quick
Google search and a pair of open ears could've shown you otherwise.
