Williamsburg's finest underground electro-noise punk outfit, Japanther recall
bits and torrents of Osaka-style noise and sugary indie-rock melody, sewn
together by severe, unapologetic punk riffs, catharthic vocal assaults,
electronic-effects, fuzz, distortion and speed. Modified hardware is
employed, including that Japanther staple of telephone receivers jerryrigged
to microphones to create the squawky, distorted gate for all vocals. -

I love you far too much to muscle in on your turf, Hep. The soft rock

Nah, if I ever tried to mimic a 7 Brides thing, I'd be calling you

Local indie-rocker supergroup that performed annually at the Mammoth
Christmas Party, doing a set of covers of whatever was
hip/pop/mainstream (at the time the reference was "MTV Buzz Bin" but I
don't know if such a thing exists anymore). Nowadays it seems like you'd
have to be a one of those hip-hop/metal bands to be able to really cover
the bases of what's popular.

Here's a pertinent excerpt from this Jon Wurster interview here:
http://www.monkey.org/~chunk/superchunk/news/interview
"
DK: What's going on with your side project, 7 Brides for the Meatwagon?

JW: We did our one show for the year at the Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill.
That was our third show and we just did our versions of the MTV Buzz-Bin
songs for the past year in a way that only we can, horribly. We usually
do it the second week of December, in conjunction with the Mammoth
Records Christmas Party, but it is an open show. In the past we've done
songs like "Seether."
[. . .]
DK: Who else is in the band?

JW: I play guitar; Jim plays bass; Joe Ventura, my former roommate, does
drums; Rob Munk, from Tinsel, handles the vocals, and Ed Crawford,
formerly of Firehose, plays the guitar and is the only one who gives true
merit to our musicianship. This year, we did that Alanis song, "Hand In
My Pocket" and that Cranberries' song - "Zombie." The one rule for our
show is that at least one person in the band has to partially like the
song....excepting the Alanis song and the Cranberries' song, but how
could we
not do them? The one song that we did that sent people scrambling to the
bar and bathroom was Soul Asylum's "Misery."

having to choose which venue from the menu at any

Two or three years in a row a "supergroup" called 7 Brides for the
Meatwagon played the Mammoth Records X-mas party. I'm having a hard
time remembering who it was, but I'm pretty sure Jon Wurster did all of
the years and Ed Crawford did one of them.
They played classic indie rock and also some current songs that were
unlikely choices for punk rockers - I dunno, Pavement, followed by
N'Sync or something along those lines.
They were great fun and the surprise element was a big part of it. The
next song could have been just about anything.
Doing the Cover Up annually got me thinking about those guys, just like
Todd was saying.
I'd do a project like that in ten seconds.

You know, earlier this year I was thinking about Rock Lotto (OK, it was
while I was watching Fluff Chick). Are there any other bands besides
Fluff Chick who trace their lineage back to Rock Lotto?

Not that it would be a slight on Rock Lotto if there weren't; it truly
*was* the best party/spectacle/rockshow Of All Time. Every time.

Yeah, it was a drag: here's a year's worth of good local music distilled
down to a week's worth of shows, including all the compromises &
annoyances and scheduling impossibilities that characterize the damn
thing the *rest* of the year. Still, there wasn't much else scheduled up
against that last night at 305 South, and it really was one of those
Hallmark Moments.

Oh, we're arguing over whether the "scene" (wait, was I supposed to
capitalize that? I can't ever remember) can/should be defined again?
He's welcome to that one, then. Dictionary, though? More like Wikipedia.

See you & Todd at the Minutemen thing at 506?

As much as I like the idea, we (Fluff Chick) didn't completely form out of
Rock
Lotto.. I had already been playing with Anne an Colin before that, but we did
pick up Kurt Hagedorn for awhile.. who anne met in her Rock lotto band..
which led to our 1st practice space and show at Dr. Soccer on 15/501 (it has
been since
torn down and a vet was built on its foundation).. That was a great party..
So I guess some form of Fluff Chick came out of Rock lotto
Now its just Me & Anne..
Can't think of other bands that formes out of Rock lotto

Rock Lotto did introduce me to the a lot of the big house crew and
affiliates..
Cantwells, Eric.. rossi.. gomez..etc.. which probably helped me finding my
way
into the wusses

So we come full circle..

Rock lotto, Cover-up, Troika etc.. all stir the pot.. and keep it
interesting..

And of course, there was the ultimate Rock Lotto power trio band, Berne
Campbell with Jeff on various instruments...

That was a lot of fun. Any plans to bring Rock Lotto back?

Didn't Rocketfire Red come out of Rock Lotto? Meanwhile, the domain

I don't think any two members of rocket fire red actually played in a
rock lotto band together, but some of the members may have been
motivated to rock by the experience.

I believe there are videos floating around somewhere. Mrs. Cantwell are

A lineup change begat a name change. The new name escapes me, but it's
something similar, but foreign sounding.

one who lived in the baity house??

i lived there from 1981 to 1989 and i bought those gold fish for the lilly
pond/and was best friends of chesley baity/fascinating lady and family.

i have a friend in durham who is going by to try to rescue them if they kept
it/from the trees on the right of the house it seems they could be alive.

so sad/so sad

i was shocked when i saw it. i actually lived there when i was a student
andwhen it was the russian house (friend and i painted the red mailbox when
wemoved in:-) it was really an amazing house and only needed, at the
time(1991-ish) some plumbing and electrical renovation as the structure was
quitesound.
the old wood paneling was exquisite. as i remember, it was builtaround the
20's
(definitely that style) so i would have thought that it couldbe historically
protected. there was a goldfish pond that weuncovered-probably hadn't been
tended in about 15 years at the time and thesebeautiful giant japanese
goldfish
were still thriving after being covered inyears of leaf piles.poor little
fish-after surviving all of that i guess they finally met theirend with a
bulldozer.ironically, i was just about to take some friends new to town over
for
the'check where i used to live' tour and saw the carnage...nice.beth

Picked up an old thread here. I've just seen the building plans and have
mixed feelings - mostly grateful that the house will be left standing.
My dad, Prof. H. G. Baity built the house himself with one or two laboror
helpers in 1940 in French Normandy style. I have some pictures if anyone
cares.
The panelling inside is pecky cypress. The beams in the porch came from my
grandfather's farm in piedmont N. Carolina. It was a wonderful house to grow
up
in!
