I think getting paid once for a single CD is fair,
don't you?

Suppose a person bought the CD new at Schoolkids, and
then returned it a year later. By your logic, should
the record store then give it away?

No, silly. It costs them money to keep it inventory.

I know I know. I'm still kidding with you.

Yeah, me too. I'm just remembering back to when record labels wanted a crackdown on used CD stores because CDs were changing hands and they weren't getting their second and third cuts. Actually, some of the stink was people selling promo copies which probably is a legitimate thing to get pissed about. You really shouldn't be selling those. (Don't recall having seen any at CD Alley, either. Are they one of the few scrupulous stores in that regard?) Anyway, for an album bought new and then resold on the used market, it didn't and still doesn't make any sense to me that the label needs or deserves further compensation, or that the transaction should be illegal. Honda didn't get any money when I bought my used Civic. The store that sold it to me did, because it was work for them to stock it and sell it.

Anyway, the labels shut up about used CDs along time ago, so it's not really a burning issue. Or maybe I didn't understand whath the fuss was back then and have it totally wrong. I'm not sure if that's what Martin even meant anyway.
