Hi all, I’ve been soliciting responses on and off-list about whether we should have a Facebook account. While Helen’s response a week back was the only definite no, others were similarly keen to ensure that it didn’t
occupy too much CCANZ time and energy. As someone who has defiantly resisted Facebook (it really does take some defiance!) and doesn’t have a personal account, I also very much agree with her general concerns.
Having said that, I’ve also concluded that Facebook is a necessary tool, especially as we attempt to grow CC beyond the (excellent) network of volunteers and professionals represented on the list.
Just to recap, Helen said: “my personal feeling about facebook pages for things like this are that they are more hassle than they are worth, & that they go against the underlying philosophy of CC. also a fb page requires someone to constantly be maintaining it &
it's just another task - when there is already a great web site that is accessible to anyone, whether they choose to be a fb user or not.”
Helen, if I promise to only use the page as a way to save CCANZ time and grow our other channels, would you be ok with it, as an experiment at least? I don’t want to alienate anyone by starting the page. If it
turns out to be too much of a hassle or to be counter-productive—which I accept it might—then I promise to shut it down.
I’m going to plan the page now, though it’s not too late to voice your concerns (or support). Best wishes, Matt Matt McGregor Creative Commons DDI: +64 4 470 5779 | Twitter @cc_aotearoa Royal Society of New Zealand

Hi all, One of my medium term plans is to formalise a network of CC champions and volunteers. The latter will ideally come from schools and universities. To do so, I’ve been raising the idea of using Facebook, purely for the purposes of recruiting
volunteers and pointing them to materials on the CCANZ email list and website. It would also be very useful for promoting events. Facebook is obviously not an ideal fit for us, though I feel that CCANZ needs to be able to speak to those people who do all their communicating (and event-planning) there. Again, the key would be to keep our CCANZ site and list as the
primary channels, and use Facebook as a recruitment tool. I’m agnostic on this, though I can see both sides. Any thoughts either way from the community?
Best wishes, Matt McGregor Creative Commons
