Thanks for that, but ... links2ssl -g
was the command that i was already trying
from rxvt. Also, i had already copied
and changed the ownership of the
configuration and bookmarks files for
the links browser, when i had first
set up the 'regular user' account.
But of course none of that would work
for any programs as long as HOME=/root.
