Thanks, Steven. Once again, i am amazed
at how a single character in an ordinary
text file can completely change the way
that a Linux system works (or doesn't work).

Of course, i didn't even have to delete
the offending line from /etc/profile --
all that was necessary was to insert
a # comment character at the beginning
of the HOME=/root line. After saving
the edited file and logging in as the
'regular user' everything worked mostly OK.

The problem i'm still having is that i can
access my Yahoo email when i'm logged
in as root, but i still get an SSL error message
when i log in as the 'regular user' and try
to access Yahoo Mail. This is when i click
the link, before i even get to the Yahoo
login page.
