It is a better idea to retain the " " around strings in csv if you will be exporting your sqlite database to a text file that you want to import into other formats, because the " " tells them to ignore commas in that string in case you have a comma as a separator.

Unfortunately, sqlite itself does not ignore the commas so you cannot use the default comma as the separator when importing dbf to csv using 'dbf' convertor, if you have commas in strings.

I will delete the " around strings before printing to paper (and in so doing lose other " that I wanted to retain). It is better to write up your database without any " or , in it to avoid such problems. The dbf format is not editable with pico/nano text editor.

PALM OS works with linux. See my pilot-link (CLI) package.
You can even use a PALM as a terminal to BL (if you have good eyes).

I just compiled palm-db-tools

http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/palm-db-tools-glibc225.tgz

which contains csv2pdb and pdb2csv and the shared library to convert between text files (you can change the comma to other separators) and the formats used by palm database programs.

pilot-db (DB 2 and DB 3) - this is a smallish freeware program
MobileDB
List
Jfile 3

The library is rather large because of all these formats. I might compile one just for DB 3 as well by editing Makefile somehow.

Question: I added to /etc/ld.so.conf the line
/usr/local/lib
but most programs I compile still cannot find their shared libraries in /usr/local/lib - what did I do wrong? sqlite finds its library there.
I packaged this one in /usr/lib instead.

I was able with sqlite to export a db to txt, edit the text file and reimport. This is an easy way to duplicate lines in the right order and then make changes to the added line.
