type free, look for 'used' (amount of memory
used by the kernel before running any programs):

p1 kernel - 7,500K
p2 kernel - 7,500K
la kernel - 5,604K

That is not a meaningful way of evaluating
the size of the kernel. Try: dmesg

With my 710K 2.4.31 kernel (IDE pci controllers, sound, usb) dmesg says:
Memory: ... 1029K kernel code, 7280K reserved.
Is this what I should record?

Sindi

BL3 ext2
Total-Available Kernel code Reserved Data Init
p2 BL3 kernel 6488K 704K 416K 5368K 44K
My 2.4.31 la kernel 8149K 889K 7032K 228K 64K
Difference 1.66M

I can probably get it down to 1.6M by removing a few things from the kernel.

This difference could be 10% of the total memory, but what are the other options if you don't want to spend $25 on a different wireless card to use with the 2.2 kernel?
