On the gateway computer I typed the ipchains lines (three of them
including echo) to set up a firewall. On the other computer I typed
route add default gw 192.168.1.2 so I could use the gateway computer to go
on the internet. (Neither was needed to telnet between my computers).
While still telnetted with busybox telnet, I could ping www.grex.org
with the gateway computer and also with the other computer, which
means both computers were online
That's what ipchains does.
(via a telnetd that requires no password)
telnetd has nothing to do with it.
Should I change this so root cannot log in via ttypN or
is the firewall enough protection?
The firewall is NOT enough protection for your unauthenticated
telnetd. It is the worst thing you can run while online.
I typed kill 48 right after testing ping.
Ping would still have worked after killing telnetd.

For the last half hour ping (busybox BL2, 1.01, and 1.10 won't work even on the computer which did the dialing, with BL3 'big' kernel, BL2 bare.i, BL2 2.4.31, on two computers, using a variety of DNS numbers. I can connect but I can't ping even the numbers of the DNS servers, or telnet, or get anywhere with links. I can dial the local bbs (I tried their three DNS numbers too) and ssh to freeshell. Ssh and telnet and ping and links work at grex or freeshell, but not on my computers.
I can ping my own computer at 192.168.1.2, the networked computer, and my assigned local IP address.
What tools does BL have to figure out this problem?
Things worked properly a few hours ago, but a couple of days ago I had the same problem (on a third computer, where Win98 would not ping anything) which disappeared by itself. There must be something wrong in the region, but what?
So I cannot use links via the gateway or even ON the gateway.
This was SO close to working.
nslookup www.grex.org IP-number-of-nameserver
Same result as ping or telnet, nothing happens until I hit Ctrl-C to get back the prompt.
