2.4.31 uses a different system, proxy instead of packet, and does not have
those three config lines. A search on ipchains and masquerade in
kernel documentation suggested:

CONFIG_NETFILTER=Y to use masquerade
CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPCHAINS=Y to 'put back' ipchains capability

I did not find FIREWALL in .config
David, or anyone else with 2.4.31, are these two all I need?

Maybe the firewall is not working perfectly (how would I know?), but ipchains worked when I add the above two to my kernel config. ipchains could be a module.

http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/2.4.31/bzimasmf.431 and confsmf.431

Support for s - sound and scsi (modules)
f - framebuffer (vesafb, and modules for matrox, riva, aty)
f - ipchains firewall built-in
also built-in ide-zip

The two 'Y's added 22,202 bytes to make the kernel 699,539.

My little laptop kernel is 603K - no sound, scsi, framebuffer etc.
I will add firewall to it eventually.

Doc said this is proxy method and works better but it is harder to set up. Not that hard with instructions.
