It's an harddisk image, not bootdisk image :)

Bootdisk image = 1.44/1.2 MB
it just boot FreeDOS and you may install FreeDOS
or just get DOS prompt. You can stay with it
but you won't have some useful DOS progs installed.
I personally use pure DOS: boot bootdisk, fdisk c:,
format c:, sys c:, restart, boot from harddisk,
and add dos soft I need.

Freedos 10MB image for bochs - it's harddisk image.
It's big because it contains also lots of FreeDOS,
not just pure kernel.sys and command.com
When booted you also get DOS prompt and lots of
FreeDOS.
For example you can create floppy image
with dd if=/dev/fd0 of=floppy_img
But you can also create image of harddisk
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb1/harddisk_image
