BL2 sounds perfect for him then - he can use his old programs. He
compiled sc and really likes it.

There's an sc for some version of BL. I forget which.

Slackware (all versions) has a pre-complied sc
in /slakware/ap1.

I know, and he is happy to hear that, and is looking forward to also trying out all the games. His other interest is music, but he can get his own playmidi directly from Redhat 6.2. And all the programs he already compiled will work with BL2. A match made in heaven. He says he can switch over once he gets the hang of slackware.

Well, I have enjoyed all of them except for matanza (sp?), which
I haven't tried because I already have several space shooting
games, kobo and bombem.

matanza is more interesting than you realize:
(1) It is a multi-player server.
(2) It uses standard telnet clients to play.
(3) It displays graphics (via telnet) using ascii art.

He does not want an ethernet card, but maybe this will get him interested.
Will matanza work over nullmodem cable?

Personally I think it is an amazing piece of software.

Cheers,
Steven
