My Internet connection was down Saturday and most of today. I
just now found a different phone number which works.

In the interim, 20 messages have been posted to the list, so
I will try my best to respond to the relevant ones.

Okay.
startx consists of the lines
xinit
touch /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy

.xinitrc:
export DISPLY=localhost:0.0 (this came from Steven)
rxvt &
exec icewm &
rxvt &

(I added the last so as to start with an rxvt)

Can you try starting X directly? I think that your startx
and xinitrc combination might be suspect.

I had tried xinit with the same results as startx.

/usr/X11R6/bin/X - gives me the X screen (no icewm). The mouse works.
On exit I get the same SpeedUps selected stuff.

/usr/X11R6/bin/X &rxvt gives me an rxvt into which to type icewm
and that gives X with icewm.

It also works if I change .xinitrc to leave only the line about
exec icewm (no &) and type either startx or xinit.

I don't need the part about touch in startx. Or the export DISPLAY in .xinitrc. Or the SecurityPolicy file (I renamed it). Or the Clocks line.

The only required changes seem to have been to horizsyn, vertrefresh, and modeline.

This is not a problem. X will still run as long as it can
find the "fixed" and "cursor" fonts, which are usually in
misc.

I assume that you tried "Virtual 1024 768"?

It works but that puts me into the upper left quadrant. Is there a way to switch between the 640 and the virtual 1024 if I only have a modeline for the 640? I can now run four full-screen programs in X if I scroll between them with the mouse but it is not very convenient to keep switching between lower left quadrant to access the menu, and upper left to see the rxvt.

Try starting X directly, without startx or xinit.

It worked, and so did xinit with only

exec icewm

and nothing about export DISPLAY or rxvt in it.

How exciting to actually have X working on a laptop computer in more than 4 colors!

Someone (me?) has added to this menu a 'links2' and 'pcmciadial' menu item that don't work. Time to add those now that X works. 'pcmciadial' would be a script to invoke /etc/pcmcia/start and then 'eznet up 0'. Another script 'CF' could invoke start and then also mount the pcmcia CF adaptor (I still need to check if it is hdb or hdc), and 'zip' could insmod parport, parport_pc, scsi_mod, sd_mod, and imm and mount sda4 (parport zip drive). My partner will love being able to download photos and copy them to zip disk or email them without thinking too hard about it.

Thanks for dragging me through this and I hope this config also works on James' Compaq laptop. Should I post the actual file?
