My Internet connection was down Saturday and most of today. I
just now found a different phone number which works.

In the interim, 20 messages have been posted to the list, so
I will try my best to respond to the relevant ones.

Can you try starting X directly? I think that your startx
and xinitrc combination might be suspect.

I bet I can guess what that contains. :)

This is not a problem. X will still run as long as it can
find the "fixed" and "cursor" fonts, which are usually in
misc.

No EndSection?

It looks OK. I don't think that it is the problem.

The Clocks line may cause a problem. Try commenting it out?

I assume that you tried "Virtual 1024 768"?

Try starting X directly, without startx or xinit.
