Yes, cdda2wav can probably work with a fifo. I would recommend
cdparanoia (Sindi, did you ever find a version for Slackware?) with
play:

cdparanoia -rqZ "1" - | play -traw -r 44100 -f s -s w -c 2 -

Replace "1" with the track number to listen to.

MPlayer can rip WAV files, and if you either have a new kernel,
or an i686 PC (plus my older MPlayer binary) you can also play it
directly. The manpage has a bit to say about this.

I would use cdda2wav or cdparanoia, as they are much smaller to
download, and simpler (no options for playing video files).

If you use workbone to start playback, this will still work. I've
only ever seen one or two CD drives with a play button on the
front. When I used Windows, I ran a 3.5mm male-to-male stereo
cable from the front of the CD drive to line in on the sound card.
You will need to adjust the Line In or PCM volume controls on your
sound card, instead of the CD one.
