I have recently become aware that newer PC's do not have an audio

cdda2wav to rip the CD to one big fifo audio.wav, then 'play'? On
the model of mplayer and play. I had to use cdda2wav from SW81
instead of 71 to get around copy protection. mplayer can also rip
wav files, I think.

Yes, cdda2wav can probably work with a fifo. I would recommend
cdparanoia (Sindi, did you ever find a version for Slackware?) with
play:

I think SW71 has a version (not certain) but I did not figure out how to use it since I already have cdda2wav working.

cdparanoia -rqZ "1" - | play -traw -r 44100 -f s -s w -c 2 -

Replace "1" with the track number to listen to.

MPlayer can rip WAV files, and if you either have a new kernel,
or an i686 PC (plus my older MPlayer binary) you can also play it
directly. The manpage has a bit to say about this.

I think we have one 'i686'. The 500MHz is another K6 but the 605MHz is a Pentium Pro P6 - will this do? We got it dead and replaced six capacitors and hope the others hold out. Or there is the overclocked 750 with three fans on the cpu and a case fan aimed at it and the power supply fan - will playing DVDs generate more heat than usual? Are 750s ever K6?

If your CD-ROM drive has a headphone jack and a play button, plug
the speakers in there and push the button. This also gives you
volume control with the little wheel.

If you use workbone to start playback, this will still work. I've
only ever seen one or two CD drives with a play button on the
90% of our drives faster than 4X have play buttons. 1996-1999.
Two of them even have << and >> buttons to skip between tracks.

front. When I used Windows, I ran a 3.5mm male-to-male stereo
cable from the front of the CD drive to line in on the sound card.
You will need to adjust the Line In or PCM volume controls on your
sound card, instead of the CD one.

Clever, but could you not simply plug the speakers into the headphone jack on the CD player? And use the hardware vol control?
