I was getting 2.7K max download speeds from this setup.

As instructed by Steven, I added in pppsetup

0 init1 ATW2 (it might be nice to have this as the default)

and next time I connected I typed

eznet log

I was connected at 28800. I repeated this experiment, same result.

The 56K part of this modem seems to be dead.

Does your ISP have support for the 56K part of the modem? In other
words, you can't use an X2 modem with a V.90 ISP.

These are relatively recent Hayes Accura V90 modems. The one that connects at 44000 looks identical to the one that connects at 28800.

The third modem (last possibility) connected at 44000 (and hung up
in 7 min) then again at 42000. (We got these for $1 each, can't
complain).

If you can get a good LTmodem, there are some drivers for BL3.
I would rather not get into linmodems. I have several working hardware modems and this one works okay. The disconnects are common to all our modems - probably from the ISP end.

This produced a zero-length buffered.mp3 file which mpg123
obediently tried to play for me.

zero-length? Is wget working?
I can get other things with wget. Normally I don't use the -O -.

Your suggestion with mkfifo buffer and cat buffer|mpg123 - did the same.

Have you actually tried these?

Yes. I now realize that the fifo one will not buffer correctly.
So it looks like the options are to download first and then use
mpg123 or get a different player.

I can't download a radio station first.

I now have two 24K stations to play with and will try the wget....|mpg123 - approach with a 44000 connection.
