Not specifically the BL3 version, the PseudoColor
problem is in the 4.0.2 version. I've also tried
the 4.0.3 version and it too appears to lack the
ability to do PseudoColor.

I've got an Xvesa on my hard drive, from XFree86 4.3.0.
Do you know if it's fixed in this version? If not, how
do I check?

Xvesa -screen 640x480x256 (or any other resolution listed as Pseudocolor when you type Xvesa -listmodes).

If it is broken you will probably see just bright blue.

With my Virge card at 1600 res (256 colors) it crashes instead.

Thanks,
David

Progress on printing with netpbm!!!!

Laser printer number one got a paper jam and my partner could not find the paper I told him was in it so he recycled it. It had a bad cartridge anyway (leaky seals or bad blade, says a repairman) and was printing a black stripe on each page as well as jamming (bad rollers?).

Laser printer (LED) number two printed one word and then said 'Out of toner'. We can order a toner kit for $18 plus $7 shipping that does 3000 pages.

I have no other laser printers, and the Panasonic did not do good Epson emulation, and I did not feel like dragging the ESCP/2 into this room (and trying to clean the built-in printhead again so it would streak less)

so I tried printing to the HP Deskjet 670 using pbmtolj.
pbmtolj filename.pbm > /dev/lp0

It printed recognizable text BUT:

What it printed was 4 times as wide as it should be (I got the upper corner of the page).

I need to learn to set the size to 1/4 as wide before printing to deskjet with the laserjet pbmtolj. There may be some switch to pbmtolj, otherwise I will need pbmreduce or pbmscale (or the pnm equivalent).

DOS printgif does not print things properly to scale - it seems to have a maximum usable print space which leaves 1" margins.

So could you post a package of anything p?m followed by scale, reduce, crop, rotate, flip, flop, merge and whatever else looks useful and is small? Also gif png jpeg tiff pdf and ps to pnm or pbm, so people can print images (pipe the output of pstopbm to pbmtolj?). Maybe set up a script to print different formats for different printers (deskjet vs lj).

If this is too much trouble I will make up a wish list.

I think netpbm uses gs to convert pdftops - does xpdf also have a CLI utility for that?

I can eventually try to make up a package with instructions on how to print to deskjet, including the three libraries from BL3 for BL2.

This was much much faster than converting with Image Magick convert. A few seconds wait before it started to print. And I don't need to set up with ghostscript, or xv, or Xvesa as user, or printcap or deskjet.filter.....

You do need parport.o parport_pc.o and lp.o
You can print to any lp without having to edit printcap.

It should be possible to print images and pdf/ps with BL3 using only 100K or so of programs. Maybe Steven could write up some elegant scripts for this, for various printers, with a setup menu.

My cup is 1/16 full! (But my cartridge is not and the deskjet 670 feeds four pages at a time....)

Thanks a bunch, David!
