I was not asked any kernel config questions about PCMCIA - why?

PCMCIA drivers for older kernels were distributed apart from the
kernel. The pcmcia-cs package @ <http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net>
contains kernel drivers/modules as well as the cardmgr utility to
load them.

I eventually started to get 'interrupt' type error messages in
linux even when booted from floppy drive - it apparently does some
maintenance on hda (DOS). Is there some way to boot linux and tell
it to ignore hda? (I could disable it in CMOS in order to use
linux to compile with).

Hmmm. Add the boot parameter hda=none (or append="hda=none")?

Thanks. I will add that when booting with zimage and loadlin from floppy disk.

ON this same computer with bad hda partition table, I am now unable to compile the kernel in linux, I get error messages about the compiler, though the same .config file works to compile the kernel elsewhere (and it even worked here once on a second attempt). Is this perhaps because linux is trying to do maintenance on the DOS drive hda during compilation and has in the process messed up some linux files somewhere (probably in the compiler - I kept reinstalling the source code)? If so, perhaps I had better reinstall linux here too. Or maybe the motherboard is going bad (it was given to us to recycle) and fails under heavy loads like this, and caused the partition table problem. Good thing I have lots of computers.
Broken computers are much more educational, just like incomplete linuxes.
