For the 720K drive, mknod fd0u720 b 2 16 works in all four computers.

For the 360K drive I typed (in /dev) mknod fd1d360 b 2 5

This works in only one of my 360K floppy drives (the one which is tan
rather than black, implying it is newer, but we have marked it 360 not
1.2M drive). On the other three, using the same floppy disk:

end_request: I/O error, dev 02:01 (floppy), sector 0 (twice)
mount: /dev/fd1 is not a valid block device

Is the d360 supposed to be a 360K or a 1.2M drive?
We have one other tan one that I can try.

I also tried making all the other 360K devices (I think it was D and u) but that did not help any.
