Only for storage. Once the executable is unpacked,
you end up with less RAM (because of the UPX overhead).

On the contrary. dd is able to write to any device
on the computer -- even un-mounted ones, even ones
with foreign filesystems unknown to the kernel.
dd is a very sharp razor -- a tiny slip can lead
to blood on the floor.
