I think you mean I can boot Bl3 and use the lilo that comes with it (is it included in just the 2 floppy version or also in the loop version?), mount ext2 BL3 partition and cd to it and then run lilo, then mount ext2 BL2 and cd to it and run the same lilo with different switches and/or lilo.conf.

In lilo.conf I need a line about read-write for BL3 but not for BL2 (should I specify read-only or is that default) so I should edit that line before using lilo to install kernel to BL2.

lilo -v -b /dev/hdb1 for BL3 or /dev/hdb2 for Bl2 (after cd'ing) using the lilo.conf from BL3 and editing the read-write line.

But I don't really need the -b /dev/hbXX line if I CD to the / of BL2 or BL3 and can just type lilo -v, if I have the kernel in the /boot directory of BL2 or BL3 and am at / when I run lilo.

Is this right? All I really need to do is change lilo.conf from read-write to read-only, and mount and CD to the correct BL version, and put the kernel there in /boot, then lilo -v?

Is there some way to specify read-write or read-only command-line and not use the lilo.conf at all?

do I need a DIFFERENT lilo package for BL2 than

Yes.

or are these all the same (independent of libc versions)?

The lilo executable for BL2 is glibc2. The lilo
executable for BL1/BL3 is libc5. However, it is
possible to run the executable from BL2 and write
the loader for a BL1/BL3 partition. And vice versa.

The BL3 package puts the kernel into the linux
partition superblock?

There is no separate lilo package for BL3. The lilo
package for BL1 puts the loader at the start of the
current root partition. It looks for the kernel in
the /root directory.

Cheers,
Steven
