I sent this to myself after telnetting to myother shell account (www.grex.org) and telnetting thence to smtp.grex.org 25.
Probably there is also some way to specify subject line, in that list Steven generated with HELP. This arrived without a subject line

I have discovered that unless I am telnetted from the same system to which I am telnetting (dialed into grex and telnettedt to the grex mailserver) I can only send mail TO someone on the target system. I could not manage to telnet tthe wccnet outgoing server, as it would not accept the login or password I gave it (which work in eznet.conf). My partner does not have telnet (shell) access. But I could telnet to sdf and thence to wccnet and send mail TO wccnet address but not elsewhere. Same problem telnetted via sdf to an ISP.
I then telnetted to grex, from grex telnetted to the grex mailserver. I can now send from my grex address (mail from:) to anywhere, or from
anywhere to grex, but not (telnetted from/to grex) from sdf to anywhere
other than grex. Relaying denied. Has to be from and/or or to grex.
This is not a big help. If I telnet to grex it is easier to use mutt, pine,or xmail. Thistelnet business does not even do line wrap (line editor only).
I could not guess the sdf smtp address.
I telnetted ot access-4-free (where I have an account) and could not get it
to work. mail from:keesan@.. got me
expecting FROM:<revpath>
wccnet may expect some long login starting in '.' whch they assigned together
with a ridiculous password that students were allowed to change.
The don't allow shell accounts to most people.
I don't know why I am able to telnet to the wccnet mail computer from sdf b
but not when dialed in to wccnet, direct telnet, wihtout being asked for
login and password. Someone probably never imagined anyone would try that.
