Didn't intend to send that anonymously.

Thunderbird email must have reset my account probably at the same time it decided I didn't really want all my past emails any more and deleted them.

I just checked on an old W95 machine I have.

1. Hitting F8 followed by F5 starts W95 in safe mode.
2. Hitting F8 then selecting option 5 (Starting with a command line) then answering all the questions with "n" gives you the ability to start Dos by itself.

Can you go straight into DOS without system
files on a Win9x computer?

Don't ask me. No Windows here.

You can, I just checked. But you may need to edit msdos.sys first to not go into Windows, then hit F5. Can someone else check if you can hit F8 followed by F5 instead?
