Below is part of my msdos.sys. I agree with your suggestion.

(As it stands, I have 2 seconds to press 5 and then Enter , to get to
a DOS prompt)

But that loads config.sys and autoexec.bat.
Whci have stuff in them which interferes with BL3.

Maybe there can be choices or branching.
