If you want to have Linux on your HD, you have two
options: (1) create a separate Linux partition
or (2) use UMSDOS or a ramdisk or a loop file from
a DOS partition.

Your win xp partition is probably NTFS. A NTFS
partition cannot be used for Linux.

Is there space on your 4gb HD for a Linux partition?
Even 100mb would be enough.
