loop is the method used to mount a file as a filesystem.
The file is formatted as an ext2 (or whatever) filesystem
and (after mounting) works just like a partion -- except
that you are reading/writing a file instead of a partition.
It's similar to using a swap file instead of a swap partition.

I do it all the time (that's why the loop module is included
in BasicLinux). Most of my development of BasicLinux is done
by gunzipping and mounting baslinux.gz

Try it yourself. It's a little weird the first time, but
you will soon get used to it.
